GENRE CODES IN LEGO MOVIE

Analyse how genre codes have been used in The Lego Movie poster campaign to appeal to a family audience:

In the Lego Movie main poster, the movie title is the first thing you see, as it stands out very clearly and because the title is made out of Lego. This then targets everyone who plays with lego and makes them want to watch the movie. Then,  the tagline on the main poster is very catchy because the words 'nobody' and 'everybody' juxtapose each other which make the viewers remember it and think it's clever. It is very short and simple which makes it stand out even more. The central image is very relatable because the characters on it aren't just from the Lego Movie are from very well known movies, for example there is Batman, Wonderwomen,Superman and the Green Lantern all in the central image so the audience immediately know the characters that will be in it. This is a good advertising idea as it makes people want to watch it even more.

Next, the poster with just Emmet on it. It makes the audience relate with Emmet as he is just like us, a normal everyday person. In huge writing it states 'Chris Pratt as Emmet', because Chris Pratt is so famous in the world of acting, people will instantly see his name and want to watch the movie. The central image is of Emmet with a horrified face which shows he also gets scared and worried (just like us).

Morgan Freeman is on the next poster as Vitruvius. In many movies Morgan Freeman is presented as a God like figure, so for him once again being the figure to look up to relates Vitruvius to Morgan Freeman himself. The central image is of Vitruvius himself, he has eyes that are lasering lights and he is wearing all white which once again portrays him as a God like figure.

Females especially would defiantly relate to the poster of 'Elizabeth Banks as Wyldstyle' purely because she is presented as one of the most powerful characters in the movie and video game. She is always the one making all the machines and updating all the technology which shows her even stronger than a male character. Relating to this, in the central image she looks very strong, powerful and almost quite edgy so her looks are her personality are the same.

Finally, the tagline is 'Lord Business as Will Ferrell'. Lord Business is the complete opposite of what Will Ferrell plays in most of his movies, so the juxtaposition of him and Lord Business are quite extreme which makes people wonder how he would be when playing the role in the Lego Movie. In the movie Lord Business is portrayed as the evil and powerful man, the central image is Lord Business very up close to the screen and yelling. This makes the viewer feel almost invaded as he is in their personal space which is just like the character itself.

Overall, all of the posters have very vibrant and fun looking colours. They are very eye-catching and quickly attract peoples attention making people to go out of their time and watch the movie.

WHAT I MISSED (IMPROVEMENTS):
The posters feature genre hybridity to engage a large family audience, mixing both action and superhero genres by using the culturally familiar superhero characters (batman, superhero, wonder women and the green lantern) typical iconography in a fashion that a range of ages will have grown up with and appreciated. The action signified on the main poster, for example, explosions, oversized villainous characters, flying cars, helicopters and superheros in some ways typical of a superhero/ action movie, but it also subverts the genre with superheroes running from danger with an unknown protagonist center stage. This creates intrigue and enigma and a hook for a family audience to watch the movie.
The character posters also feature a range of character types, for example, Lord Business is clearly villainous and tightly framed in close-up to show his anger and rage, whereas Wyldstyle's close up also reveals the choice of complimentary colours on her jacket, lipstick and hair which are likely to appeal the younger female aspect of a family audience. This implies the different character types have been chosen by media producers to appeal to an inclusive, large family audience.

  1. Mark 6 out of 10. Sound work, Evie, which would be improved in the exam with a few more points, such as below.
    1. In the ensemble poster, you need to comment on what else is visible in the poster that attracts audiences, such as the chase and explosions promising the thrills of action adventure movies.Equally, as there are superheroes running away from an unknown enemy, this creates intrigue and subverts the genre.
    2. The merging of film franchises within the context of the globalization of the media industry is clear from the depiction of the superheroes Batman, WonderWoman, the Green Lantern and Superman. This ensures that even larger audiences are reached. a range of ages will have grown up with these familiar characters.
    3. You make relevant comments about the representation of Emmet as 'everyman' and notice the opposition created by the vocabulary but should hammer home the point that, as such, he appeals to a family audience as we can relate to him. You should also explain that the tagline anchors this message: the nobody who saves everybody. 'Underdog overcoming odds' themes appeal to family audiences. You could draw attention to the 'reluctant hero' in Emmet who inspires us to believe that we could all be heroic when up against the forces of injustice, like Lord Business.
    4. Wyldstyle: for 'defiantly' write 'definitely'
    5. Sensible analyses of the individual posters but draw attention to more of the details such as way in which villainy (being evil and scary) is constructed in Lord Business through the teeth-like imagery, the use of extreme close-up, the monobrow frown.
